Many of the best examples of Cape Dutch houses still in existance are found in the wine region of Franschhoek, South Africa. The name means "French Corner", because of the French settlers called Huguenots who original came to the Cape to flee religious persecution in France. Their venture was rewarded with great prosperity, as you will find some of the most beautiful wine farms and Cape Dutch houses that they created here.

HOUSE BOSCHENDAL

Our sightseeing tour route begins at Boschendal wine farm. This is one of the most accessible Cape Dutch houses and a must see Cape attraction, as it wellcomes tourists to its restaurant and wine tasting - now accommodated in the outbuildings of the house. The manor house itself is open as a museum. Also tour the nearby Rhone house and Rhodes cottages.

HOUSE LE PROVIDENCE

Deep in the valley of Franschhoek lies this beautiful Cape Dutch house. It is privately owned and unfortunately not open to sightseeing tourists.

HOUSE LA DAUPHINE

One of the finest exsamples of Cape Dutch architecture, set as it is against the Drakenstein mountain ranges. The exquisite neoclassical gable is dated 1804 and stands out against the broody gray mountains of the Franschhoek Valley. The house is unfortunately not open to sightseeing tours.

HOUSE GRANDE PROVENCE

This Cape Dutch house welcomes wine tasting tours to its cellars, and one of the outbuildings had been converted to into a luxury guest house. The front and back gables are dated 1815 and are fine examples of the Neoclassical style. The wine estate hosts annual cheese fairs which draw many tourists to the farm.
