NEOCLASSICAL STYLE CAPE DUTCH HOUSES
Neoclassical Cape Dutch houses became popular after the Baroque style architecture period started waning. The front facade started to include pilaters to frame the front door and these would rise up into the gable. Many of the finest Cape Dutch houses and heritage sites are in the Neoclassical style. The farm houses at Land en Zeezicht and the cellar at Neethlingshof farm, to name but a few.
A true gem of architecture, the house at La Dauphine in Franschhoek captures so much of what makes the Cape Dutch Houses special: The finely crafted central gable, thatch roof and immaculate setting amidst mountains, vineyards and cypress trees.
The house is currently located in the suburbs of Somerset West and has views of the mountains and the sea as the name suggests. None of the outbuildings have been preserved but the main house is in good condition.
The cellar at Stonewall is also located in Somwerset West and has a lovely unique gable. The low white walls surrounding the farm buildings characterise the Cape Dutch architecture style.
A fine example of the Neoclassical style is found on the cellar at Neethlingshof farm just outside Stellenbosch.
