OLD CAPE DUTCH STYLE
Modern attempts to recreate the traditional old Cape Dutch style, come in varying degrees of success, from vary authentic, to truly tacky! It's important to only use thatch or corrugated iron for the roof. Thatch is the best but tiled roofs don't usually look good. The best examples have the eaves clipped completely flush, and the smallest eave suggests it is not a genuine Cape Dutch house. Shutters should be workable, or at least appear to be workable. These examples are by Beverley Hui architects as well as other Cape Town architects.
This house is situated in de Zalze winelands golf estate. The long pool is on axis with the center of a covered verandah. A wonderful space for entertaining guests. The roof is made of corrugated iron instead of the traditional thatch.
Also on De Zalze winelands golf Estate, this house departs from the traditional symmetry in favour of an asymmetrical modern design. Columms next to the pool add a poetic touch.
